Description:

WILLIAM E. BALDWIN
(1827 – 1864) Confederate brigadier general in command of a mixed brigade of Mississippi and Tennessee soldiers. Winning distinction at the Battle of Coffeeville, Baldwin would later participate in the battles of Port Gibson and Champion's Hill during the Vicksburg Campaign. Baldwin was captured when Vicksburg fell. After being exchanged, he was assigned to the District of Mobile. There, he was killed in an accident when a broken stirrup caused him to fall off his horse, near the Dog River in Alabama. Very rare A.L.S. 2pp. 4to., Columbus, Miss., Aug. 23, 1852, in part: '...Business is quite dull - every one complaining that it is more so than at any time previous during the summer...The rail road question is lost - by 2 or three votes...A ratification meeting was held at the Court House today - address by Cobb...'. Baldwin also seeks psalm books and an organ for his Presbyterian church, and congratulates his correspondent upon the birth of a son. Tape remnant on verso, with a newer, transparent piece of tape affecting last four letters of signature - a skilled conservator could easily remove this thoughtless repair - else generally good to very good.
