Description:

WILLIAM DWIGHT
(1831-1881) Union brigadier general found left for dead on the battlefield at Williamsburg by Confederate forces and held as a prisoner of war until his eventual release in a prisoner exchange November 15, 1862. War-date A.L.S. 3pp. 8vo., Baton Rouge, Mar. 25, 1863, in part ‘…In this Brigade there are two Regiments from the State of New York; the 91st Rgt commanded by Col. Jacob Van Zandt, and the 131st Rgt commanded by Lieut Col Nicholas W. Day – Such is the condition and character of those Rgts that I feel it my duty to make the following representations to you that all may be done to render there Regiments more efficient - The 91st Regiment is much demoralized – There was a quarrel between the Colonel (Jacob Van Zandt) and the late Lieut Col (J. Tarbell). A quarrel never goes in one Reg, there Van Zandt in both sides – to fill the vacancy of Lieut Colonel, Col Van Zandt will make or has already made some nomination, I shall respectfully recommend that such recommendation be disregarded…' A minor split to the right margin, otherwise very good.
