Description:

WILLIAM C. HANDY
(1873-1958) American composer and musician, known as the "Father of the Blues" for his work in transforming the blues from a regional music style with a limited audience to one of the dominant national forces in American music. Signed sheet music, "Saint Louis Blues", by Handy (New York: Handy Brothers Music Co. Inc.), 1914, 6pp. folio, inscribed: "To Mr. R.H. Hill with all good wishes W.C. Handy 9-29-42" in blue ink. Also present is a T.L.S., 1p. 4to., New York, Sep. 29, 1942, also to Hill. Handy transmits the signed sheet music as per an earlier promise, and mentions that the front cover depicts St. Louis, his birthplace, in 1872, one year before his birth. The letter is signed at the conclusion on Handy''s behalf by his daughter, Katherine Handy Lewis, who adds an ink post-script, stating that her father is resting and has asked her to sign in his place. Both pieces are very good. "Saint Louis Blues", composed by Handy, is a fundamental blues and jazz standard, and was one of the first blues songs to become a pop hit. It has been performed by countless artists, most famously Louis Armstrong.
