Description:

(1869-1940) U.S. Ambassador to Germany from 1933 to 1937. Instructed by Roosevelt to do what he could to protest Nazi treatment of Jews 'unofficially,' while also attempting to maintain cordial diplomatic relations. Convinced from first hand observation that the Nazis were an increasing threat, he resigned over his inability to mobilize the Roosevelt administration, particularly the State Department, to counter the Nazis prior to the start of World War II. Fine content A.L.S. as Ambassador on official letter to John G. Eberhardt, former Consul in Berlin who would soon join Ambassador Joseph Kennedy in London, 2pp. 4to., Berlin, June 23, 1937. Shortly before he would leave Berlin due to his exasperation and failing health, Dodd reaches out to one of the few remaining State Department officials who could have helped him. In part: '...I am both glad and sorry to hear of your going to Washington. They need you very much there I am sure - especially [since] European conditions are in such dangerous drifts. But I have felt that you could help so much here that I have more than once asked that you might become our Counsellor here. You know Germany so well...Our country certainly needs real thinkers to help it decide what is best to do in our world - so much more close together than politicians ever seem to realize...' Fine. Dodd and his family were featured in Erik Larson's book 'In the Garden of Beasts'.
