Description:

WILLIAM "BILLY" MITCHELL
(1879 - 1936) Army general regarded as the father of the U.S. Air Force. Mitchell advocated increased investment in air power, believing that this would prove vital in future wars. He argued particularly for the ability of bombers to sink battleships. Good content T.L.S. "Wm. Mitchell" on a Colorado Springs hotel letterhead, 1p. 8vo., May 14, 1926 to the editor of the Jefferson County (Wisconsin) Union. In part: "…I am just concluding a lecture tour which has extended over most of the United States. I find people all over the country very much interested in aviation, and in our problem of national defense…" Fine. Only six months earlier, Mitchell had been called before a court martial (which included Douglas MacArthur) to answer charges relating to his public statements condemning Army and Navy brass of: "almost treasonable administration" of their departments following the crash of the Shenandoah and three winged aircraft. Mitchell was found guilty and the previous February resigned in order to give speeches on air power and national defense. Fine.
