Description:

Aide-de-Camp to Continental Army generals William Maxwell and Lord Sterling. Fine association A.L.S. 'Wilm. Barber', 2pp. 4to., New York, March 16, 1788, addressed to Nicholas Gillman and complaining about a minister in New Hampshire. In part: 'There is a man in your state that is a preacher of the Gospel who everyday for two years hast been giving me such hints that he intends to defraud me....This man's name is John Cozens Ogden...about two years ago he was a petty merchant between that place and New Haven in Connecticut where he had deluded my purses and betrayed his own honor and confidence, he received benediction from Bishop Ebring and was sent to reform the uniformed parish in Portsmouth NH...More than a year ago I told my story to a lawyer in New York and authorized him to proceed with the law but have yet heard anything.' A post-script on the next page in Barber's hand continues: 'It has been so much of the fashion of late to open letters which pass the post office in search of politics- that the writers find an occasion to make this note and present his compliments to the curious if this should fall into the hands of such...' Small loss from a wax seal, else very good condition. Nicholas Gilman Jr. (1755–1814) was a soldier in the Continental Army, a delegate to the Continental Congress, and a signer of the U.S. Constitution, representing New Hampshire. He was a member of the United States House of Representatives during the first four Congresses and served in the U.S. Senate from 1805 until his death in 1814.
