MARINUS WILLETT (1740-1830) American soldier and a leader of the Sons of Liberty, with Washington and Sullivan and a commander of forces in the Mohawk Valley. Scarce war date A.D.S. "M. Willett Colo ", 1p. 4to., Albany, Jan. 30, 1783, a pass permitting "the bearer Tomas Clump (express order) to pass to Head Quarters at New Burgh - Should any accident happen to himself or his horse, All Majisrates [sic] and others are humbly requested to afford him such assistance as he may stand in need of in order that his dispatches may not be delayed - And any necessary expenses which may accrue on this account I promise to Settle...". At the time, Willett was planning an ambitious expedition against British-held Fort Oswego on the shore of Lake Ontario. The early February 1783 attack, which entailed a long march in snowshoes was aborted due to some unexpected complications encountered only several miles from the target. Usual folds, light tape marks at extreme corners, otherwise very good. $200-300
