MARINUS WILLETT (1740-1830) American soldier and a leader of the Sons of Liberty, with Washington and Sullivan and a commander of forces in the Mohawk Valley. Fine content war date A.D.S. "M. Willett Colonel Commanding ", 1p. oblong 8vo., Fort Rensselaer, Feb. 7, 1783, acknowledging the receipt of stores for use in his intended operations against Fort Oswego. In part: "...This Certifies that Mr. John Lebrett has brought one sleigh Load of Publick Stores from Albany to this place...". At the time, Willett was planning an ambitious expedition against British-held Fort Oswego on the shore of Lake Ontario. The early February 1783 attack, which entailed a long march in snowshoes, was aborted due to some unexpected complications encountered only several miles from the target. Usual folds, light tape marks at extreme corners, otherwise very good. A few marginal losses, some moderate soiling, otherwise very good. $200-300
