WILHELM HEINE
(1827-1885) German-born artist and Union brevet brigadier general who served with the Army of the Potomac. Captured during the Peninsula Campaign and imprisoned briefly at the notorious Libby Prison. Brevetted in 1865 but stripped of his rank when accused of disobedience, thence repairing to Germany. Rare, fine association war-date manuscript L.S. 2pp. legal folio, Julians Creek, June 6, 1863, to Gen. GEORGE W. GETTY, who signs on verso. In part: ‘…I have the honor to submit to your approval the following appointments with the request kindly to forward and the same to His Excellency the Governor of the State of New York…'. Heine then lists 18 men and their promotions, signing at conclusion and adding: ‘Col. Comdg. 102nd N.Y.'. On verso, Getty signs a manuscript endorsement. Getty (1819 - 1901) commanded the Army of the Potomac during the final year of the war, at Yorktown, Malvern Hill and Antietam. Fine condition.
