Description:

A rare pair of relics of the deadliest maritime disaster in history, a black rayon cap tally, 33 1/4" x 1 1/4", embroidered with the ship's name "M.S. Wilhelm Gustloff" in yellow thread, flanked by the embroidered flags of the NSDAP and the "Deutsche Arbeitsfront". The ribbon is uncut and shows thread remnants where originally sewn to a crewman's cap, with some fading to the thread colors, else very good. WITH: Small souvenir photo album, 36pp. oblong 12mo., illustrated with a printed image of the Gustloff and the name of the ship on the front cover, and containing 36 3" x 2" (sight) b/w photos showing the exterior and interior of the ship, with scenes from various locations visited during its cruises as part of the "Kraft durch Freude" ("Strength Through Joy") program. Each image bears a typed caption. Shows notable soiling and wear to the covers, with some tears to the pages within, else very good. Two pieces. The WILHELM GUSTLOFF was torpedoed by a Soviet submarine while evacuating German troops and civilians from East Prussia, with the loss of more than 9,000 lives.

Shipments are sent via USPS Priority, USPS International Priority, DHL (for most overseas shipments) or FedEx Ground at the auctioneer's option, signature is always required, unless other arrangements are made. Handling and shipping charges will be added to the invoice in one entry. Buyers should be aware that large, framed, fragile or odd shaped items can incur substantial shipping and packing charges. International shipments are invoiced by DIMENSIONAL weight, not the item weight.
