Description: WILHELM FURTWANGLER PERFORMS FOR HITLER'S ALLIES
WILHELM FURTWANGLER (1886-1954) German conductor, one of the leading conductors of the 20th Century. Although he was never a member of the Nazi party, the morality of his decision to remain working in Germany during this World War II has been continually debated since his death. T.L.S. 1p. 4to., Vienna, Feb. 12, 1941. Obergebietsfuhrer H. Muller writes to Hitler Youth leader BALDUR VON SCHIRACH advising that Furtwangler and the Vienna Philharmonic will be performing in Budapest in February and forwards the conductor's passport and entry and exit permits. Fine. At this time, the Hungarians, reluctantly allied with the Germans, were shipping Jews off to death camps in Germany and Poland.
