Description:

WILHELM ERNST WAR CROSS
Very rare example of the Wilhelm Ernst War Cross, awarded to men who fought in World War I who also earned the Iron Cross, 1st Class. The medal features a slightly oversized Maltese Cross, with cross arms are adorned with white enamel, and it measures 45 x 45 mm. In the center of the cross, there is a wreath of green enamel laurel leaves, with a pair of crossed swords extending through the cross's interior. The centerpiece of the decoration is the White Falcon in gold enamel. The falcon is superimposed over a gold enamel center within a golden ring. The falcon's wings and chest are decorated with a series of cross etchings that represent feathers. The reverse of the decoration features a blue enamel background within a gold-toned ring. It bears Grand Duke Wilhelm Ernst's crowned royal cypher etched over the blue background. The decoration comes with a coke-bottle-effect-swollen pin, and the year "1915" is engraved just above the catch. These decorations were produced by Royal House Jeweler Th. Muller and were limited to only 266 awarded.
