WILHELM CANARIS
(1887 - 1945) German admiral and head of the German intelligence agency Abwehr. Implicated in the July 20 bomb plot, Canaris was condemned to death and was walked naked and barefoot to the gallows at Flossenburg. Rare presentation signed book: 'Das Bildnis Friedrich des Grossen' ('The Portraits of Frederick the Great') (Berlin: Nibelungen Verlag: 1940), 148pp. of text with 68 additional pages of b/w plates, in beige cloth with an inset gold medallion on the front cover, and gold title on the spine. An in-depth study of dozens of portraits of Frederick the Great, with a foreword by Hermann Goring. Between the cover and first flyleaf is a 1p. 12mo. tipped-in printed Christmas presentation by Canaris, Berlin, Dec. 24, 1940, which he inscribes to 'Herr Oberst Dr. Schaefer' and signs at bottom adding 'Admiral und Amtschef'. The corners of the covers are a bit frayed, with slight soiling to the covers, else very good to fine.
