Description:

(1895-1945) German general and commanding staff officer in the German Army. He committed suicide in the Fuhrerbunker along with Hitler and other officials at the conclusion of the Battle of Berlin. Late war-date T.L.S., 1p., legal folio, Berlin, Germany. Dec. 8, 1944 to Gen. FRITZ BRAND (1889-1967), thanking him for his military service and informing him that he will receive recognition soon. In part: '...I have spoken with the Fuhrer and the Chief of the General Staff about your matter. I believe I can tell you that you will soon receive the award you deserve and that the Führer's full recognition will also be expressed at your later departure. Your farewell would be carried out in such a way that your departure takes place on March 31; by then, the DU procedure can be carried out with certainty. I deeply regret that your health now makes it necessary for you to leave military service. I hope that your condition will improve over time so that you can enjoy the rest you deserve for many years to come, fully satisfied with your military achievements....' Burgdorf signs the conclusion in black ink. Two file holes at left margin, else fine condition. FRITZ BRAND served as the first commander of the 78th Infantry Division until he was transferred to the staff of the Commander-in-Chief of the Army and was appointed to the newly created position of General of Artillery, where he remained until 30 September 1943. In the meantime, he was appointed General of Artillery on 1 August 1940. Brand was discharged from the Wehrmacht on 31 March 1945.
