Description:

862. THORNTON WILDER (1897 - 1975) American novelist and playwright, author of The Bridge of San Luis Rey, Our Town, and Hello, Dolly!. Fine A.L.S. "Thornton Wilder", 2pp., 8vo., Edgertown, Mass., June 24, 1974. Near the end of his life, Wilder writes to his German publishing agent Lucy Tal, in part: "...Delighted to hear from you. Vienna remains one of my favorite cities; and during my first visit there I am indebted to you and to Peter Tal for many first encounters; and meeting Gruenheimer and Felix Salten [author of Bambi] and many others. I have no memory of those details of changing to the Fischer Verleg [publishing company] - I am glad that I was able to do something for you in those days of Temperance of rights...But now I am very contented with Herr Mercy and Herr Haertling. Herlitschka was a splendid translator but a very leicht beleidigt man; I think all translators are. I wish to return to Germany this year to attend the meeting of the Pour G...but my health is poor (half blind, long convalescence from a spilled disk; and some respiration trouble)...". With an eight-page draft of Lucy Tal's letter to Wilder. Very good condition.$250 - 350
