834. WALT WHITMAN (1819 - 1892) American poet whose volume of verse Leaves of Grass was initially rejected by the public and cost him his job in the federal government. It was only in his later years that his genius became recognized world-wide. Excellent S.P. "Walt Whitman", 4 1/4" x 7 1/4", adding "born May 31 1819" beneath his image. The photograph depicts a bearded Whitman, seated leaning against a table. With a printed statement in the lower margin: "Photographed from life, Sept, '72, Brooklyn, N.Y. by G.F.E. Pearsall, Fulton St.". Boldly penned with excellent contrast, one of the finest signed images of Whitman obtainable. Fine. $2,000 - 2,500
