Description:

WHITE HOUSE CHINA - SAMPLE PATTERNS
Nine pieces of White House presidental china, the design spanning the administrations of Roosevelt, Truman and Eisenhower, made by a variety of international makers in a modified version of the classic Wilson pattern originated by Lenox in 1918. A classic design, the heavily gilded rim bears an alternating star and three-bar design with a single highly-detailed presidential eagle. Makers of the various pieces include Syracuse China, who had been contracted to make the china through the end of the Eisenhower administration, along with makers Pickard, Castleton Studios, and Royal York. There are minute differences in the designs, which without careful scrutiny appear identical. Also included is a proposed vice presidential dinner plate of identical design. These pieces were submitted for approval to Cmdr. Ronald L. Jackson (1928-1990). Jackson, a Navy officer, was tasked with supervising the planning and implementation of reciprocal state dinners, the operation of the White House Mess and food service at Camp David and aboard Air Force One, and travelled everywhere with Presidents Johnson through George H. Bush. It seems clear that Jackson and/or the White House failed to approve the pattern, thus these are unique examples. Fine.
