Description:

WHALING
A good collection of photographs, ca. 1890-1910 documenting the harvesting of whales on beaches largely in the British Isles. Several have been placed in a frame together with snippets of correspondence from an observer in the summer of 1899: "Sloops & steamer came from Montrose for whales. Sea was red with blood for days...About the whales -- financially a failure. Provost Mitchell Montrose bought the lot for £25 packed blubber in barrels & took carcasses to his manure Factory. 11 Whales were got lately at Sunday - Orkney...As I write another school of whales is nearing the bay. They have been dodging about for the last month but our fisherman will have nothing to do with them as they are not up to extracting oil like the Arcadians & there are no buyers on the spot...". Also includes three photo postcards, one showing a "Whaling Scene, Nfld." as well a shot of a Catholic priest sitting in a whale's mouth in County Mayo. An interesting group.
