Good group of eight signatures and one letter, all executed by British and American military figures who served in China or other Asian posts, includes: LAWRENCE SHADWELL (1823-1887) British Army general, captured and freed in China during the First Opium War. A.L.S., 1p. 8vo., [n.p.], Nov. 23, 1882, giving his date and place of birth. Mounting remnants on the verso, else very good; JOHN CHAPLIN (1840-1920) awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions at the Taku Forts during the Second Opium War, A.N.S., 1p. 12mo., Leicester, March 26, 1905; THOMAS L. SMITH U.S. Navy fleet surgeon who accompanied the Perry Expedition to Japan, signature on a 2 1/2" x 8" purser's receipt, New York, June 1, 1857; CLAUDE MACDONALD (1852-1915) British diplomat, led the defense of the foreign legations under siege in Peking during the Boxer rebellion, signature on a 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" card, adding a salutation and the date "Peking 30 December 1899", laid down on a larger card; ARTHUR CUNYNGHAM (1812-1884) aide-de-camp to Lord Saltoun in China, present at the capture of Nanking during the First Opium War, signature cut from a letter, 1 1/2" x 4"; HENRY A. WISE (1819-1869) U.S. Navy officer, accompanied the first Japanese embassy to the United States, and later provided Abraham Lincoln with his eyewitness account of the battle between the ironclads USS MONITOR and CSS VIRGINIA, signature as Chief of the Bureau of Ordnance on a 1 1/4" x 5 1/2" slip of paper; SILAS CASEY (1841-1913) U.S. Navy Rear Admiral of the Pacific Squadron, commanded naval infantry and artillery during the Korean Expedition of 1871, signature on a 2 1/4" x 4" slip of paper, laid down on a slightly larger backing; LAWRENCE SHADWELL LEWIS KIMBERLY (1830-1902) U.S. Navy officer, commander of the USS BENICIA during the Korean Expedition of 1871, later Commander in Chief of the Pacific Squadron, signature on a 2 1/4" x 4" slip of paper, adding rank and the date May 15, 1901; and JAMES SCHENK(1807-1882) U.S. Navy officer, bombarded the fortress at Qhi Nhon as commander of USS SAGINAW, signature cut from a letter, 2" x 2 1/2. Some items bear mounting remnants or identifying inscriptions in pencil on the verso, else very good.
