Good group of four letters, two notes and eight signatures, all executed by American and European diplomats and colonial administrators stationed in China, includes; ALEXANDER GRANTHAM (1899-1978) British Governor of Hong Kong immediately following World War II. A.L.S., 1p. 8vo., Hong Kong, Dec. 4, 1951, thanking his correspondent for a gift; JOHN N. JORDAN (1852-1925) British Minister Plenipotentiary to China. T.L.S. "J.N. Jordan", 1p. 4to., Peking, Jan. 21, 1915, to colonel L.C. Coe. Jordan acknowledges the receipt of a letter from Coe, indicating that the latter will be returning to England, and naming his successor as commander of the British Legation Guard. Very good to fine; EDWARD BOWRA (1841-1874) clerk and interpreter for the Chinese Maritime Customs. A.L.S., 1p. 8vo., [n.p.], Dec. 26, 1864, accepting an unstated invitation on behalf of himself and several others. Folds, ragged left edge, and laid down on a larger sheet, else very good; R.P. DE SILVER, U.S. consul and naval storekeeper at Macau, circa 1850. A.L.S., 2pp. 8vo., Macao, Jan. 29, 1850, to Commodore David Geisinger, offering his greetings on Geisinger's arrival; JOHN FRANCIS DAVIS (1795-1890) Chief superintendant of British trade in China, later Governor of Hong Kong. A.N.S. "J.F. Davis", 1p. 12mo., Pall Mall, [n.d.], inquiring the location of a meeting. Mounting remnants and pencil identifying inscription on the verso, small section of paper cut out and repaired, else very good; NICHOLAS O'CONOR (1843-1908) British legation secretary in Peking, Minister Plenipotentiary to China and Korea. A.N.S., 1p. 12mo., [n.p.], Jan. 20, 1886, in the third person, executing his name as "Mr. O'Conor"; JOHN LEIGHTON STUART (1876-1962) United States ambassador to China. Signature on a 3 1/4" x 5 1/4" card, with a typed identifying description; WILLIAM J. CALHOUN (1848-1916) U.S. Minister to China. Signature on a 2 1/2" x 3 3/4"; WILLIAM ROBINSON (1836-1912) Longest-serving British Governor of Hong Kong. Signature on a 4 1/2" x 6 1/4" sheet of stationery as Governor of the Bahamas; FRANCIS MAY (1860-1922) British colonial secretary and later Governor of Hong Kong. Salutation and signature cut from a letter, 2 3/4" x 5", with about 25 words in his hand on the verso; GEORGE BOWEN (1821-1899) British colonial administrator at Hong Kong. Signature on a 2 1/2" x 7 1/2" slip of paper, as Governor of Victoria, Australia; JAMES H.S. LOCKHART (1858-1937) British Colonial Secretary at Hong Kong and Weihaiwei. Salutation and Signature on an approx. 1 1/2" x 4 1/4" slip of paper, laid down on a larger card with seal of the mission at Weihaiwei; HENRY B. LOCH (1827-1900) Private secretary to Lord Elgin's embassy to China. Signature on a 2" x 4" card; and HENRY A. BLAKE (1840-1918) British Governor of Hong Kong. Salutation and signature cut from a letter, 1 1/2" x 3 1/2", with about 12 words in his hand on the verso. Some items bear mounting remnants or identifying inscriptions in pencil on the verso, else very good. Fourteen pieces.
