Description:

Rare original pencil drawing by Union Quartermaster CHARLES GREEN SAWTELLE, uniquely gifted to his classmate and friend JAMES E. B. STUART (1833-1864), Confederate Major General of Cavalry who circled McClellan's army twice, and in 1864 was mortally wounded at Yellow Tavern. This 7.75 x 5.25 in. (sight) drawing depicts an archer, with his left foot on a fallen stag, drawing his bow and aiming at a nobleman on horseback, perhaps the legend of Robin Hood. It is signed 'Sawtelle' in lower right of image. One tiny spot of soiling, else very fine condition. Matted and framed. While Stuart and Sawtelle were fast friends while at West Point, they would soon be split by the oncoming Civil War. Sawtelle served as Chief Quartermaster of the Cavalry Corps for the Army of the Potomac, while Stuart served as one of Robert E. Lee's most audacious cavalry commanders. In fact, while Stuart was notoriously late to the Battle of Gettysburg, Sawtelle was busy forwarding supplies from Washington and Alexandria for use in the Gettysburg campaign. This exact piece, minus the framing, was sold by Heritage Auctions in 2010.
