Description:

Original lithograph poster of the West Baden Springs Hotel, described as the ‘Eighth Wonder of the World', 37 x 26.d in, published by 'Edwards Deutsch & Beitman Litho'. The Indiana-based hotel has an unlucky history, having burned down twice since its original opening in 1852, the second fire occurring under the ownership of Lee Sinclair in 1901. Due to a quarrel with a neighboring hotel owner, Lee decided to power on and rebuild, only this time the hotel would be fireproof, circular, and have the largest dome in the world. This poster showcases the result of Lee's grandiose dream, depicting the circular resort with its large dome topped with the American flag. The luxury resort is surrounded by all kinds of amenities including a casino, theater, and atrium. People can be seen on the expansive grounds enjoying themselves in various ways. At the bottom left the poster reads: 'Seven Hundred and Eight Rooms - Telephone - Hot and Cold Water - Toilet and Clothes Closet IN EVERY ROOM' with the bottom right reading: 'ABSOLUTELY FIRE PROOF OPEN ALL THE YEAR'. The poster also includes some of the nicknames the resort had earned such as 'The Carlsbad of America'. Signature of the artist seen at the bottom left 'Cross'. There is noticeable foxing at the bottom and the top right. The poster is presented in a wooden frame, the glass is soiled, and the frame itself shows signs of wear on the finish. Although not in the greatest of conditions, it is still an impressive piece of Americana.
