Description:

1055. JOHN WESLEY (1703 -1791) Anglican minister and Christian theologian who was an early leader in the Methodist movement. Methodism had three rises: the first at Oxford University, the second while Wesley was parish priest in Savannah, Georgia and the third in London after Wesley's return to England. This was the first widely successful evangelical movement in the United Kingdom. Scarce A.L.S. "J. Wesley", 1p, 8vo., London, Feb. 26, 1777, to a Miss Ball, with the attached integral leaf present. In full: "Certainly this is the work of God! That Mr. H. should give one hundred pounds! Then you need despair of nothing. You may go on trusting in God. And He that has given you this token, will withhold no manner of thing that is good. But see that you build in a proper place & upon a proper plan. I believe if you employed our bro. John Edwards of Westminster, he would save you thirty percent building such a cheerfully elegant House as he has done at Danking. You have reason likewise to rejoice over your Family. Why sh'd one be left in Egypt? Go on praising & trusting Him that doth all things well I am My Dear Sister, Your Affectionate Brother...". Lightly toned with mailing folds and minor tears to the address leaf with no loss. Auction records list only nine other Wesley letters having been offered for sale in the past decade. Very good. 3,000 - 5,000
