Description:

WERNER RANCK
(1904-1989) Highly decorated Generalleutnant in the Wehrmacht during World War II. Fine content T.L.S. ‘Ranck', 2pp. 4to., Hamburg, May 3, 1974, to Dr. Charles B. Burdick. Ranck relates some of his wartime experiences, including leading the Prussian 121st Infantry on the Eastern Front until the capitulation of Latvia and Livonia, service in the Crimea, and as a general staff officer in the Demyansk Pocket, and then as a chief of the General Headquarters in the Nevesky District. He states that he commanded two divisions at the end of the war, but was captured by the Russians and spent more than ten years as a prisoner. He was twice sentenced to death, once by hanging and once by firing squad, although both were commuted to 25 years hard labor. He was allowed to return to his family in 1955, after which he lectured at Hamburg University. After 1960, he was the manager for the Association for the Promotion of Science and Humanities in Germany. Ranck concludes by wishing Burdick luck with his research and hopes that it will have resonance with future generations, as many young people distance themselves from the past. Signed at the conclusion in blue ink. Central horizontal fold, else fine.
