Description:

WERNER PIENER OIL PAINTING OF HITLER YOUTH IN BDM AND HJ UNIFORMS
An exceptionally well-executed oil on board, 'Junges Paar in BdM u. HJ Uniformen', 26.75 in. x 34 in., a depiction of two slender members of the Bund Deutscher Madel and Hitler Jugend in their respective Third Reich uniforms, both shown in three-quarter length standing views. Both regard the viewer, their expressions devoid of emotion and deadly serious. Both boy and girl wear the gold HJ member pins, emblems of great distinction within these organizations. A haunting image at the very least, in fine condition. Although unsigned on this side, this painting was painted on the reverse of another oil, this one depicting a Bavarian mountain lake and forest with mountains towering in the background and signed 'Peiner' at lower-left. The artist placed canvas about the edge of this painting, probably to better secure it when the BDM/HJ painting was set in his easel. Artist WERNER PEINER (1897-1984) was one of the most talented official painters of the Third Reich. He designed monumental tapestries for the New Reich Chancellery, a nude of his even hung over Goring's bed at Carinhall. In 1944, during the final phase of the Second World War, Adolf Hitler included him in the 'Gottbegnadeten Liste' ('God-gifted' list), a special list created by Hitler and Goebbels of their favorite contemporary artists. Actually multiple lists of composers, authors, musicians, actors, conductors, etc., the most important visual artists to Third Reich and National Socialist Culture, an acknowledgement of their combined undeniable talents, but mainly designed to exempt the artists listed from military service, in the last push to change the tide of the war. After the war, Piener was interned and all his property was confiscated. This exact painting previously sold in important German auction on 21 February, 2014. Original one of a kind oil painting.
