Description:

WERNER HEISENBERG
(1901 - 1976) German physicist and Director of the Max Planck Institute who developed the theory of quantum mechanics and the principle of indeterminancy. Good content and association T.L.S. on Max Planck Institute letterhead, 1p. 4to., Munich, Nov. 7, 1967 to Prof. John Lukacs (b. 1924), a Hungarian-born American historian who has written more than thirty books, including "Five Days in London", "May 1940" and "A New Republic". The letter, in German, reads in part: "...I remember your manuscript ''History and Physics''...we talked about it some years ago...I won''t promise to study your book as without a thorough study one cannot have a sensible opinion..I am very busy...If you come to Germany you are welcome to visit me and we can discuss your questions..." Very good. "Physics and History" was indeed published, and Lukacs set forth his belief that Heisenberg''s principle of uncertainty and indeterminacy had implications for the humanities that were yet to be determined.
