Description:

WERNER BEST
(1903 - 1989) Nazi jurist, SS-Obergruppenfuhrer, police chief and Gestapo leader. He was the first chief of Department 1 of the Gestapo and initiated a registry of all Jews in Germany. As a deputy of SS-Obergruppenfuhrer Reinhard Heydrich, he organized the SS-Einsatzgruppen paramilitary death squads that were responsible for mass killings. His black ink signature cut from the top of a document, bearing his hand-inked rank and SS number 'SS-Oberfuhrer. 23377.' Trimmed at the bottom, bearing an inked date that appears to be either '1938' or '1939' - during which time Best was used by Himmler and Heydrich to legally justify attacks on Jews and was placed in command of choosing leaders for the Einsatzgruppen task forces and their subgroups. Fine condition. Loosely pasted beneath a printed portrait on a 160gm 8.5 x 11 in. card.

Shipments are sent via FedEx and DHL (for most overseas shipments) or FedEx Ground at the auctioneer's option. Due to complications from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we will ship with USPS Priority Mail only if the buyer submits their request to us in writing and accepts responsibility for delayed shipments. Signature is always required, unless other arrangements are made. Handling and shipping charges will be added to the invoice in one entry. Buyers should be aware that large, framed, fragile or odd shaped items can incur substantial shipping and packing charges. International shipments are invoiced by DIMENSIONAL weight, not the item weight. Please contact us for an estimate before bidding NOTE: Large, heavy or bulky items may not be shipped by the auctioneer - arrangements for shipping of these items via a third-party shipper may be arranged through the auction house. Customers who supply their own courier account number will still be charged a handling fee.
