Description:

Very interesting partly-printed D.S., 54pp. 12mo., Kreuzberg, July 10, 1936, a "wehrpass" issued to a Kurt Langer upon his induction into the Wehrmacht. The book bears his identification photo above his signature on page two, with his biographical information on the facing page. Most interestingly, and despite the fact that he lists his religion as Catholic, a pocket within the front cover contains a carbon-copy type letter, 1p. oblong 8vo., [n.p.], Jan. 22, 1942, to the "Standesamt [Civil Registry Office] in Heydebreck", in full: "Obergefreiter Langer Kurt, born 26.10.1915, in Annengrund, is 25% Jewish "Mischling" ("hybrid") on his father's side, and has for the purpose of his marriage documents demonstrating non-Aryan descent." Despite this, his service record listed in the Wehrpass indicates that he remained in Wehrmacht service until at least September of 1944, taking part in the invasion of Poland and the Battle of France, as well as duties at the Atlantic Wall. It further lists the various units he belonged to both prior to and following his exposure as part-Jewish in 1942, and indicates that he spent much of the period from 1942 through the war's end laid up in the hospital, first with a wrist injury and then with Diphtheria. A "Certificate of Employment Registration", dated Oct. 11, 1945, is also present, indicating that Langer survived the war. The book shows wear and minor soiling overall, else very good.
