Description:

An interesting World War II photo album, 40pp. oblong 4to., containing 149 b/w images, most 3 1/2" x 2 1/2" snapshots, depicting the service of a Wehrmacht soldier in Germany, France, and the Eastern Front. The album opens with a postcard photo of the unnamed soldier, as well as similar images of his brother and brother-in-law, who also serve in the Luftwaffe and Heer, respectively. The first candid images show our soldier's initial training, primarily his participation in construction details, before the action shifts to France. Here we see many views of destroyed bridges and towns, captured tanks and artillery, and most interestingly, four views of French prisoners of war, with many African colonial troops visible among their ranks. Following scenes taken on leave in Germany, the soldier includes many snapshots taken in Poland, most notably ten views of Jewish villagers, two captioned "Juden bei froher Arbeit" ("Jews are happy workers"). One individual present in both photos wears an armband with a clearly visible Star of David. This same section includes other depictions of Polish villages, including the jarring juxtaposition of an image of a burning house beside a group photo of German soldiers mingling happily with the villagers. The album closes with several images depicting the soldier's brother-in-law's service in France. Two photos are detached but present, with one portrait missing from the first page, else very good.
