Description:

WEHRMACHT MINEFIELD MAP
Unusual war-date map, 16 1/2"x 12 3/4", a 1:50-scale "Minenplan" ("mine plan") showing the distribution of land mines within a specific sector near the village of Hoignee, Belgium, now a suburb of Liege. The minefield spans a pair of hedgerows, and is laid out in a mathematically calculated grid. It is dated July 26, 1944 in black ink at top, and is additionally stamped "Geheim!" ("Secret!"). Below the grid appears the warning: "Wiederaufnahme der Minen verboten, Räumung nur durch Sprengung!" ("Recovery of mines prohibited. Remove only by blowing up!") An inset map at lower left shows the mined sector within the larger landscape around Hoignee, and much additional information, including types of mines used and the names of the engineers responsible for laying them, appears at lower right. The plan shows a horizontal fold, with a paper clip mark at top left, some paper trimmed at bottom left, and some chips to the edges, else very good. Liege would be liberated by the U.S. 1st Army on September 8, 1944. In the days that followed, clearing minefields such as this would have been a top priority for American combat engineers.
