WEHRMACHT AZERBAIJANI LEGION VETERINERIAN OFFICER'S TUNIC
Very rare German Azerbaijania Legion veterinarian's tunic, an earlier version tunic with four scalloped pockets and six button front closure, all bearing silver pebble finish buttons. Silver bullion national eagle and swastika is sewn to right chest, Very rare German Azerbaijania Legion veterinarian's tunic, an earlier version tunic with four scalloped pockets and six button front closure, all bearing silver pebble finish buttons. Silver bullion national eagle and swastika is sewn to right chest, with ribbon sewn above left breast pocket indicating the wearer having been awarded the Medal for Gallantry and Merit for Members of the Eastern Peoples, Second Class in Gold, commonly called the "Ostvolk Medal". Oberleutnant shoulder boards with veterinary insignia and one brass pip each are sewn to the garment, and shoulder straps bear appropriate veterinarian corps coloring. These insignia do not exactly match, but not surprising considering the lack of supplies on the Eastern Front. A World War I Iron Cross recipient's ribbon is threaded into the top button. A rare "Aserbaidschan" shoulder patch is sewn to the right sleeve. The fully-lined tunic bears a maker's cloth patch from "Friedr. Wesemann, Hannover...". Wear consistent with use, some spots, generally very good. The Azerbaijani Legion was formed in December 1941 as the Kaukasische-Mohammedanische Legion (Muslim Caucasus Legion) and was re-designated 1942 into two separate legions, the North Caucasian legion and the Azerbaijani legion. It was made up mainly of former Azerbaijani POW volunteers but also volunteers from other peoples in the area. It was used to form the 162nd (Turkistan) Infanterie-Division of the Wehrmacht in 1943. Later, some of these Azerbaijanis joined the Azeri Waffen SS Volunteer Formations.
