711. HENRY C. WAYNE (1815-1883) Confederate brigadier general who retained his commission for but 26 days, resigning in order to maintain Georgia's militia which Gov. Joseph Brown was intent on keeping under his own control. Fine content war-date A.L.S. 8pp. on differing sized letter sheets, 8vo., Milledgeville, June 10, 1861, to "My Dear Friend" In small part: "...I find the religious intelligence and information of our people in a low condition, and the State controlled by two politico-social, religious organizations, the Baptists & Methodists, that are the superstitious element of man's nature in building a machinery for political power in the State, Social control & education and local matters...the leaders of these two systems, are either designing demagogues, or ignorant enthusiasts... many of who...find Spiritual strength in whiskey...and against all others who do not think as they say...Taverns and politics occupy there while the Churches are given over to the women...We want some stirring up some energy...What the people...need is the clear, positive distinctive teachings of the Church, not officiously and madly thrust upon the public, but quietly, unobtrusively, but firmly upheld when questioned or assailed. The President has proclaimed next Thursday as a day of fasting, humiliation and prayer, and the sects are getting up a Grand Union demonstration to be held in the State House...we are called bigoted but I have advised our people not to reply, but simply when do charged to ask for the prayers of the accuser that we may be enlightened as we are earnest seekers after truth...The laymen of Alabama made a mistake in not confirming the Clerical Election of Dr. Pinckney...". Wayne refers to President Jefferson Davis' declaration of national day of prayer and fasting in the Confederacy, along with a Union rally to be held in the Georgia State House by church leaders.
