A superb lot of 19 pieces signed by major players in this historic scandal, many with excellent content. Includes: JOHN J. SIRICA, T.L.S. on Supreme Court letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington, Oct. 24, 1973, to a professor declining his request for an opinion about the case and adding: ‘…I have made a policy not to speak out concerning these matters except in open court…'; JAMES MCCORD, three pieces: two D.S. 2pp. 4to., March 19, 1973, identical photocopies of his answers to questions posed by Sirica, and mentioning ‘…I am whipsawed in a variety of legalities…In the interest of justice, and in the interests of restoring faith in the criminal justice system...I will state the following...', then adding a number of opinions about Watergate, including: ‘…The Watergate operation was not a CIA operation. The Cubans may have been misled by others to believe that it was…'. Each signed at conclusion, with a signed FDC honoring the philosophy of ‘Law and Order', May 17, 1968; JACOB JAVITS, T.L.S. on Senate letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington, May 7, 1973, to a correspondent declaring: ‘...I denounced [Watergate] during the Presidential campaign and have denounced it since…I have long opposed illegal wire-tapping and eavesdropping…I am strongly supporting the Special Senate Investigation Committee…'; HUGH SCOTT, T.L.S. on Senate letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington, May 11, 1973, to a correspondent reporting his thoughts, in part: ‘…As I have pointed out many times, since June 19, 1972, this matter should be thoroughly investigated…President Nixon has fully committed himself to resolve this matter…The appointment of Elliot Richardson as Attorney General…should be viewed with great confidence…I wish to stress that no Republican holding public office has ever condoned this affair…'; FRED D. THOMPSON, T.L.S. on Senate letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington, Aug. 6, 1973, thanking a correspondent for her letter and adding: ‘…Rest assured that we will continue not only to investigate the 1972 Presidential campaign, but that we will do so in a calm, fair and impartial manner…'; SAM J. ERVIN, JR., two pieces: a T.L.S. on his Senate letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington, May 4, 1973, to a correspondent who seeks his opinion, adding: ‘…The committee intends to pursue the investigation to its fullest…the effort is bipartisan…'; with a printed D.S. 1p. 4to., Oct. 20, 1973, a copy of the text of his resignation, boldly signed in marker at bottom; WILLIAM RUCKELHAUS, typed D.S. 1p. 4to., [n.p., n.d.], a copy of the of his resignation; DWIGHT L. CHAPIN, T.L.S. 1p. 4to., [n.p.], Oct. 15, 1973, on his personal letterhead to a professor seeking information about Watergate, adding: ‘…it would be most inappropriate for me to make any comments…believe me, I do have some philosophical points of view…'. Lightly offset; ARCHIBALD COX, two pieces: printed D.S. 1p. 4to., [n.p., n.d.], a copy of his invocation of ‘Executive Privilege', in part: ‘…the attempt by Richard Nixon to exert Executive Privilege in the Watergate Investigation…Like Judge Sirica, [the Court of Appeals] rejected the claims of Presidential immunity…'; and a T.L.S. 1p. 4to., Washington, Aug. 27, 1975, on his ‘Watergate Special Prosecution Force' letterhead thanking his correspondent for her letter; RONALD L. ZIEGLER, T.L.S. 1p. 4to., Washington, Aug. 23, 1974, on White House letterhead to a professor, in part: ‘…You were kind enough to write and let me know of your forthright support for President Nixon…it is heartening for President Nixon to know that he has the vital support of many Americans…'; SPIRO T. AGNEW, T.L.S. ‘Ted', 1p. 4to., Washington, Aug. 27, 1973, on his Vice President letterhead to a correspondent, thanking him for his words of ‘encouragement and support…'; MAURICE H. STANS, two items: a typed D.S. 1p. 4to., [n.p., n.d.], an excerpt of the ‘Stans Statement', declaiming the scandal and adding: ‘…I had no advance knowledge of the Watergate affair and no knowledge of any efforts that may have been made to cover it up…'; with a T.L.S. 1p. 4to., Washington, Oct. 3, 1973, to a professor, adding: ‘…I am under instruction of my attorneys to not communicate anything on the Watergate and related matters to anyone…'; and FRANK WILLS, the Watergate guard who discovered the break-in, two items: a copy of the pamphlet ‘The Watergate Hero: An Eyewitness Report by Frank Wills', together with a bold ink signature on an oblong 12mo. lined sheet. A great assemblage of players and a must-have collection for the political collector!
