T.L.S. on Committee for the Re-Election of the President letterhead, 1p. 4to., Dec. 14, 1971, as Administrative Director, to attorney Martin W. Schwartz, in part: ‘…Your letter to Mr. John Ehrlichman expressing your desire to be of assistance in the campaign to re-elect the President has been forwarded to me for consideration. We are truly grateful for your enthusiastic offer to help and we appreciate your taking the time to write. At this particular time our staff requirements in the legal area have not yet been determined and it is very difficult to ascertain what they will be until after March of next year. However, we will place your name in an active file and can assure you that it will be given every consideration…Again, may I thank you for your interest. With your continued enthusiastic support and that of other concerned Americans, the campaign to re-elect the President will most certainly be a success…' JOHN EHRLICHMAN (1925 –1999) was an American political aide who served as White House Counsel and Assistant to the President for Domestic Affairs under President Richard Nixon. Ehrlichman was an important influence on Nixon's domestic policy, coaching him on issues and enlisting his support for environmental initiatives. The committee was indeed a success, but it backfired with the infamous Watergate break-in, which lead to the downfall of the Nixon administration. Fine.
