Description:

(WATERGATE) ALEXANDER BUTTERFIELD
(b. 1926) Deputy Assistant to President Nixon from 1969-1973. He revealed the existence of the White House taping system during the Watergate investigation but had no other involvement. Fine content A.L.S. 2pp. 8vo., [n.p., n.d.], a hand-transcribed copy of Butterfield's bombshell testimony on his knowledge of the White House recording system with handwritten footnotes on the impact of said testimony. In the footnotes, he makes note that ‘The transcript on pg. 1 does not refer to my initial revelation of Nixon's tapes. That occasion was 3 days earlier, Friday, July 13, 1973, in an interview with Watergate Committee staffers Don Sanders, Deputy Minority Counsel; Eugene Boyce, a Minority investigator; and Scott Armstrong, a Majority investigator who opened the meeting and spent 3-plus hours asking questions mostly about administrative matters…he turned the questioning over to Sanders who got quickly to the point: ‘Mr. Butterfield, you told us earlier about a recording device on the president's desk used exclusively for dictating to his secretary, Rose Woods…was there even any other recording devices in the Oval Office?' I was taken aback. Here, quite suddenly, was a question that met all the criteria I required to be totally forthcoming: clarity, directness, and no ambiguity. Compelled to respond in kind, I said, ‘Yes. Since February of 1971 there have been listening devices and tapes…' Fine. Includes a photograph of Butterfield with this document.
