Description:

Set of four watercolor paintings, mounted in a 20 3/4" x 17" frame, depicting uniforms worn by soldiers of the British Army during the American Revolution and earlier, executed by CECIL C.P. LAWSON (1880-1967), historian and author of "History of the Uniforms of the British Army", for which he created illustrations such as those presented here. The illustration in the upper-left corner is a full-length frontal view of a grenadier in a red coat with a high mitre-style hat with a metal front plate, and carrying a musket, sword, bayonet, and accoutrement box. The illustration at upper right appears to depict soldiers of an earlier era, possibly circa the English Civil War. The rank-and file wear lobster-tailed pot helmets, red coats, and yellow pantaloons, while their officer wears a blue coat with a wide-brimmed hat trimmed with a feather. A drummer brings up the rear. The two bottom illustrations depict uniforms more typical of those used and worn during the American Revolution: the left-hand example depicts a line of five soldiers standing in front of a fortification, each wearing a distinct uniform, depicting different styles of beaver grenadier and tricorn hats, red coats of the coatee and tunic styles with blue and gold facings. One is clad in a heavy brown woolen cloak, while another, clad in a blue coat, may be a Hessian mercenary. The final illustration depicts an officer armed with a spontoon, with a gorget and a tricorn hat, and two grenadiers with their bayonets fixed and their muskets at the ready. Each illustration shows some minor toning, and is unsigned, although an inscription on the mat identifies the as "Originals by Cecil C.P. Lawson". Very good.
