Description:

(1783 - 1859) American author of the classic tales 'Rip Van Winkle' and 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow'. A.L.S., 2pp. 8vo., [n.p., n.d., but certainly Irvington, N.Y.], to his neighbor and niece’s husband, wealthy New York businessman Moses H. Grinnell. In full: '...I would advise you to stockade the inside of your ice house with chestnut piles instead of planking it. Plank rots within a few years but chestnut piles would last a long time. Locust piles would be much better, but much dearer. The [house] would last until Bub. was an old man and long after. We must get up some kind of fence between us to protect my northern frontier. Since the old fence and the hedge have been removed, my territories are subject to continual invasion from the vagabond cattle which infest your grounds. The East and South Gables of your house are up and look well. If the weather is good the other two Gables will be up in the course of the week.' In fine condition. Grinnell's summer home was in Irvington, New York, adjoining Washington Irving's 'Sunnyside.' During the summer months the writer and the Grinnell family spent much time together.
