(1783 - 1859) American author of the classic tales Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. A.L.S. 2pp. 8vo., [n.p., n.d.], to Aaron Vaile, U.S. Charges d'Affaires to Great Britain, in part: "...I will thank you to look in my room for a volume of Gibbon's Rome, and send it in the trunk with the clothes. I believe there is also a volume there on the popular games & customs of England by Strutt. If so I should like it also. My Diplomatic clothes are in a small valise in...my apartment. The volume may be sent as it is or the clothes taken out & put up in the box and the [illeg.] van Buren...". Irving served as the British legations charges d'affaires in 1831, until the arrival of Martin van Buren. Relieved of his duties, Irving recommenced writing and complete his Tales of the Alhambra there. Marginal wear at left, very good.
