Lot 259
259 GEORGE WASHINGTON War-date front panel of a postal cover signed "Go: Washington" at lower right and addressed in a secretary's hand: "Hnble Major General [James] Sullivan Providence". At top is pasted docketing from the original letter: "Genl Washington 12th Nov. 1778" (possibly in Sullivan's hand), with a second blank strip pasted at bottom. Slight uneven toning, ink slightly faded to about 8/10, else very good. In the original letter, Washington asked for an accurate list of those who were to be commissioned in Col. David Henly's regiment. John Sullivan (1740-1795) had been captured at Long Island, exchanged, and later wintered at Valley Forge. After taking the blame for American losses at Brandywine and Germantown, in 1779 Sullivan led a massive campaign against the Iroquois in western New York. $5,000 - 6,000
