262. GEORGE WASHINGTON Fine association A.D.S. penned at the bottom of a letter to Washington by his younger brother JOHN AUGUSTINE WASHINGTON (1736-1787), both brothers having Augustine Washington as their father and Mary Ball Washington as their mother. John's letter, 2pp. 4to., was written from Bushfield, July 17, 1785 and is addressed to "My dear Brother". It reads in part: "...Previous to my setting off to Mt. Vernon and Alexandria the last time I was up, a great Coat of yours...and a book...to read on the road, was carefully sowed up in a bundle and delivered to me, but I forgot both...I thought you seemed undetermined when I saw you last in case both your Jack asses came in safe, where you should fix one of them - if you should be of opinion that Berkley would be as advantageous as any other place, I would gladly take him to my plantation where I have a very careful manager...he should be well taken care of out of my expence for the privilege of putting my own Mares to him...I would wish to have nothing else for plantation use...". The letter is docketed by George Washington signing his name in the text: "From Col. Jn. A. Washington 17th July 1785" with a collector's notation beneath Washington's writing. Fold splits expertly repaired with archival tape grazing the top of John Washington's signature, else boldly penned and very good. $3,000 - 4,000
