Description:

WASHINGTON DRINKS AS THE WAR GRINDS ON...
CALEB GIBBS(1748-1818) First commander of the Commander-in-Chief's Guard, the unit that protected George Washington during the Revolutionary War. During his command of Washington's "Life Guard" Gibbs was promoted to the rank of Major on July 29, 1778. Fine content A.D.S., 1p. 8vo., "Head Quarters" [West Point], Oct. 4, 1779, in part: "...Received of Col. Jeremiah Wadsworth...1 terce port wine cont'g 42 1/2 gallons for His Excell'cy the Commander in Chief...". Very good. At this point in the war, after coming off defeats on the Connecticut coast and a bayonet massacre of soldiers at Tappan, Washington was settling in for what would be the coldest winter of the 18th century.
