Description:

WARTIME JAEGER-LECOULTRE TRIPLE DATE OWNED BY CIC LT. ROBERT O'NEIL
A Jaeger-LeCoultre Triple Date in rose gold, believed to be a caliber 474/A movement, manual winding, 36mm. case with plastic crystal, the dial with raised gold indices, red numbers, black 'railroad tracks'. Serial no. 335275, ca. 1945. In working condition, although it appears that the month counter does not move at this time. With replacement leather band. This watch was once the property of American Army Counterintelligence Corps (CIC) Special Agent, First Lt. Robert E. O'Neil, Service No. 0-2000179, assigned at one time to Region V, Regensburg. O'Neil interrogated famous Waffen-SS commando OTTO SKORZENY (1908-1975), Nazi officer and Hitler's chief and favorite commando, who made a daring mountain-top rescue of Mussolini, placed English-speaking soldiers in American uniforms to mislead American forces in the Bulge, and after the war headed the organization that helped hundreds of ex-SS officers flee Germany. O'Neil was lucky enough to obtain another watch that was given to Skorzeny by Italian dictator Benito Mussolini in thanks for the rescue of Mussolini from his Italian captors. That watch was used as 'bait' of sorts to obtain information on postwar German and SS escape routes, and O'Neil kept the watch at the end of the operation. This watch was obtained by O'Neil in Germany prior to his interrogation of the famous commando. A letter of provenance attesting to this fact from the son of First Lt. Robert E. O'Neil will be provided to the winner.
