Description:

WARREN G. HARDING
(1865 - 1923) Twenty-ninth President of the United States. Good content T.L.S. as President on White House letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington, Sep. 14, 1922 to his friend Joe Chapple of the National Magazine in Boston. In part: '...I should have known you were deeply concerned about Mrs. Harding even though you had not taken the time to express it. I have been going through a period of very great anxiety, but I think Mrs. Harding has passed over the critical period and is quite certain to make a good recovery...' Soiled, some marginal fold splits and with two stains at top, still quite good. In early September Mrs. Harding came down with a serious kidney ailment, and the public was alerted as to the severity of it on September 8 in a medical bulletin. She developed sepsis and was falling in and out of consciousness. By September 11 her condition had worsened and, as she later related, she had a near death experience seeing two figures at the end of her bed. As she fought back from what she called the 'Valley of Death', Florence gradually improved. Florence would indeed survive, passing away at the end of 1924. She would outlive her husband, who would die in office a year after signing this letter.
