Description:

WAR OF 1812 NEWSPAPER
Newspaper, the "Farmer''s Cabinet", June 1, 1812, 4pp. folio, a newspaper published in Amherst, N.H., days before the declaration of war against Great Britain. The paper contains several articles that hint at the coming conflict, including a report of militia drafts in New York, the text of a speech on the trade restrictions then in place between Britain, France, and the United States, reports of Indian attacks in Ohio and Indiana, and a small note which records the return of the sloop-of-war Hornet from an unsuccessful diplomatic mission to sign a trade agreement with France. In addition, there is a short item titled "Something Brewing", which notes: "Many accounts from Washington indicate something important to be brewing there on the subject of our foreign relations ... Other letters from Washington sayd: ''The Embargo is to be ratified soon, and Letters of Marque, &c. granted against England''..." The front page of the paper is split along the original horizontal fold, with the split continuing partially on the back page, with one other small tear and a printing error at the bottom left-hand corner, toned, else very good.
