Lot 1141
1141. WAR IS HELL IN THE SOUTH PACIFIC Lot of 19 photographs, 3 1/3" x 5 1/2" b/w, all apparently contemporary, some perhaps reprints commercially sold at the time, showing various battle scenes from American attacks on Japanese forces in the South Pacific. Among the six tamer images are photos of debarkations, jeep-mounted missile launchers in action, GI's hunkered down while under fire, and so on. The balance of the photos are quite graphic, showing shattered tanks from both sides, copious numbers of bodies on the beach, others smoldering following flame-thrower attacks, bodies in trenches, and so on, with one image showing a happy islander with a severed Japanese head. Lovely. Slight curling, else fine condition. $100-150
