Lot 125
125. WAR DISRUPTS THE AMERICAN FRONTIER IN KANSAS A good early war-date Union officer's, 4pp. 4to., retained letter by 1st Lt. Albert V. Colburn, Fort Leavenworth, June 19, 1861 to his commander Lieut. Col. William H. Emory concerning the latter's resignation from the army. In part: "...I was much disappointed to find that you had left Fort Leavenworth without giving me an opportunity to bid you good bye...and... regret...that you were no longer an officer of our regiment, or of the Army. I would have regretted your leaving the service under any circumstances, but this regret was greatly increased by my knowing...that your resignation had been tendered without your knowledge, and in direct opposition to your wishes...I...hoped that on your arrival in Washington...would be able to recall it. No one could have displayed more energy or...guarded the interests of the United States more closely, than you did, while withdrawing the troops from the Texas frontier...did I suppose that anything could induce you to join the Army of the /so called/ Southern Confederacy, or that you could...be induced to take up arms against the flag you have served under so long and to faithfully...during my long...acquaintance with you, I have never known you to breathe a disloyal sentiment...I sincerely hope that you will yet be able to recall your resignation, and that we shall soon meet again under the Stars & Stripes...please make my respects to your family and remember me particularly to George. Hoping that I shall soon hear from you, and that I shall soon see you again a Colonel in the Army..." Hailing from Maryland, Emory remained in the US army and became a brigadier general during the war. He was mustered out of service as a major general in late 1865. As for Colburn, he died prematurely on June 17, 1863 while an assistant aide de camp. Some minor edge wear and toning, else very good. $200-300
