Description:

WAR DEPARTMENT ORDNANCE DRAWINGS AND SPECIFICATIONS
Large grouping of approx. 120 pages of highly detailed original schematic drawings, sketches, notes, test results, and relevant retained correspondence concerning the American development phosphorus shells, smoke shells, illuminating shells, and tracer anti-aircraft ammunition just prior to the United States entry into World War I. This impressive grouping was all developed and retained by Lt. C. D. Miller of the Engineering Bureau of the Office of the Chief of Ordnance, War Department, and is all dated from the first few months of 1918. The material is certainly technical in nature, but clearly shows the rapid course set for the development of these weapons, even mentioning success other countries had had using similar ordnance types in shooting down zeppelins. Every aspect of the development of the various types of ordnance seems to be addressed, including the contents of the shells, propellants, casings, finishes - even the type of parachute to be used for star shells. A fine lot for a reader a bit versed in chemistry and engineering.
