Description:

WAR DEPARTMENT ORDERS FOR LINCOLN'S FUNERAL PROCESSION
Rarely-seen printed order issued by the War Department, 3pp. 4.75 x 6.75 in. (disbound), Adjutant General's Office, War Department, Washington, Apr. 17, 1865, signed by Asst. Adj. Gen. W. A. Nichols by order of Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton. A very detailed document setting forth the exact order and assembly of Lincoln's last trip through Washington. The procession was to be headed by a regiment of cavalry, two batteries of artillery, a battalion of Marines, and two regiments of infantry. Among those following were clergy, the hearse with pall bearers, several members of Congress, ten prominent military and civilian leaders including Grant, Lincoln's family, Andrew Johnson, the cabinet, ex-presidents, the House and Senate, Supreme Court, and so on. The end of the document sets forth the timetable, and notes proper use of badges of mourning for military men. Very good.
