Description:

WALTHER WARLIMONT
(1894 - 1976) German officer, Senior Operations Staff Officer to Keitel, a member of Hitler's inner circle, tried at Nuremberg. T.L.S. "W. Warlimont", 2pp. 4to., Rottach-Egern, Feb. 3, 1962, to Dr. Charles B. Burdick. Warlimont answers a letter originally written by Burdick to Admiral Leopold Burkner, apologizing for being unable to thoroughly answer Burdick's questions. He goes on to discuss a trip made by certain German officers to Italy in spring of 1942, including admiral Wilhelm Canaris, in part: "...Given that this assumption is correct, the trip had only a very vague connection with Hitler's concern about the Allies landing on the Iberian Peninsula... the goal of this trip was constituted of establishing contact with our own and Italian intelligence agencies... a special reason for that could definitely be a concern at that time [April 1942] caused by the appearance of multiple American agents, disguised as consuls in France and North Africa, and by Gen. Giraud's escape from German captivity. The amended guidelines for the engagement of German troops in Spain... were only in part the result of the fact that Hitler entertained the possibility of invading Portugal and Spain... it was... just another variation of the... question of where to expect invasion... due to great demands on the Wehrmacht in the east... forces that were available for advancing to Spain were even more limited than before..." Warlimont concludes by wishing Burdick all the best for his scholarly work. Signed in black ink at the conclusion. Folds, files holes at left margin, else very good. WITH: T.L.S. "Warlimont", 1p. 4to., Gmund am Tegernsee, Oct. 7, 1964, again to Burdick. Warlimont expresses his apologies at being unable to adequately answer Burdick's queries regarding Operation "Felix", the hypothetical German invasion of Gibraltar. He states that the Officers of the Supreme Command who usually planned operations were likely responsible for planning "Felix", and names generals Huesinger and Philippi of the army and admiral Gerhart Wagner of the navy as the most likely planners. He provides contact information for Philippi and Luftwaffe general Speidel. Signed at the conclusion in black ink. Folds, file holes at the left margin, else very good. Two pieces.
