WALTHER SOMMER
(1893 - 1946) German lawyer, SS-Oberfuhrer, and head of Department III (Constitutional Law Department). Sommer was involved in all major legislative projects and ordinances directed against Jews until the end of 1939. Executed in the USSR. Fine content T.L.S. on NSDAP letterhead, 'Braun Haus', Munich, June 1, 1939 to JOSEF BURCKEL (1895-1944), Gauleiter of the Saar Palatinate and Vienna who promoted anti-Jewish decrees and seized Jewish property, and deported nearly 50,000 Jews to their deaths. In part: '...With interest learned from a newspaper article that the Central Office for Jewish Emigration in Vienna has provided for the emigration of 100 000 Jews from Austria in ten months. I would appreciate your forwarding a detailed report concerning this matter and especially the extent of the transfer of commodities and Jewish fortunes following this migration...' Stamp docketed and initialed by Burckel at top. File holes in left margin, else very good. Following the Anschluss, Jews fled Austria for their lives. The Nazi-backed government made certain that it profited from this disaster, seized cash assets, property, and assessing enormous 'exit fees'.

Due to complications from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we will ship with USPS Priority Mail only if the buyer submits their request to us in writing and accepts responsibility for delayed shipments. Signature is always required, unless other arrangements are made. Handling and shipping charges will be added to the invoice in one entry. Buyers should be aware that large, framed, fragile or odd shaped items can incur substantial shipping and packing charges. International shipments are invoiced by DIMENSIONAL weight, not the item weight. Please contact us for an estimate before bidding NOTE: Large, heavy or bulky items may not be shipped by the auctioneer - arrangements for shipping of these items via a third-party shipper may be arranged through the auction house. Customers who supply their own courier account number will still be charged a handling fee. Please allow 2-3 weeks for shipments after receipt of payment due to the high volume of packages being shipped.
